I hope you can sort this out and it benefits you fairly, but at this point, to several others' points, you may not be able to do very much considering both of you technically own the car. I would, however, get his name off of it in case he tries to pull something like this in the future. I don't know the whole story but this is a pretty d*ck move, and I'd assume he would do it again, given the opportunity. I certainly wouldn't try to steal the engine back, or do anything that would be questionable, especially if you are considering small claims, or other legal action. Try and be as clean in this situation as possible. two cents given!
